Tufts University is a private research university in Medford and Somerville, Massachusetts. A charter member of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), Tufts College was founded in 1852 by Christian Universalists who worked for years to open a nonsectarian institution of higher learning affiliated with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Several of its programmes have affiliations with the nearby institutions of Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Tufts is consistently ranked among the 30 best secondary schools in the country, and is highly selective, admitting only 15% of applicants as of fall 2018. In 2019, Forbes ranked Tufts 25th among research universities, 34th overall, and ranked the undergraduate school 29th among private colleges in its America's Top Colleges ranking, which includes 650 military academies, national universities, and liberal arts colleges.
Infrastructure, Campus & Courses
Tufts offers over 90 undergraduate and 160 graduate programs across ten schools in the greater Boston area and Talloires, France. The university has a campus in Downtown Boston that houses the medical, dental, and nutrition schools, as well as the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, affiliated with several medical centers in the area. Tufts is one of the most selective colleges in the United States, with the Princeton Review giving it a selectivity rating of 97/99. The US News & World Report names Tufts' undergraduate admission as "most selective" for the class of 2020, Tufts accepted 2,889 or 14.3% of 20,223 applicants. For the class of 2022, the interquartile range of SAT scores was 1410-1550 while for the ACT it was 3235.
Accomplishments & Alumni
Tufts is also a member of SHARES, which allows students to have library access in participating members such as Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Caltech, Dartmouth, Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, Princeton, Stanford, UPenn, and Yale. Tufts also offers joint undergraduate degree programmes with the New England Conservatory, and the Sciences Po Paris with additional programmes with the University of Paris, University of Oxford and constituents of the University of London. Alumni and affiliates include Nobel laureates, heads of state, governors, senators, representatives, Emmy and Academy Award winners, and National Academy members. Tufts alumni in the government sector include Admiral James Stavridis, former dean of The Fletcher School at Tufts University and former Commander of Southern Command and Supreme Allied Commander of NATO, Mulatu Teshome Wirtu, President of Ethiopia from 2013 to 2018; Kostas Karamanlis, former Prime Minister of Greece; Shashi Tharoor, former United Nations Under-Secretary-General, and Indian Minister.
Student Diversity & Visiting Companies
According to the Princeton Review, the undergraduate student body is ethnically and socioeconomically diverse. The Advocate ranks Tufts as one of the top 20 gay-friendly campuses. Of those accepted for admission to the undergraduate Class of 2019, 27 per cent are Asian, Hispanic, African-American, or two or more races. There were 145 international students and 6 illegal immigrants or DACA students. Of domestic students admitted, some 31 per cent self-identified as one or more races other than Caucasian, including Asian Americans, African Americans, Hispanic Americans and Native Americans. International students make up 15 per cent of the undergraduate student population. Students come from all 50 states and represent 71 countries. The top 10 countries represented are China, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Turkey, Singapore, Canada, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam. Services like Handshake are used by universities to facilitate job opportunities. Top organisations include Predilytics, Cigna, Deloitte, and Sanofi.
