The University of Aberdeen is the fifth oldest university in the UK. It was formed in 1860 with the merger of Kings College and Marischal College and finds its roots back to 1495. The university is highly acclaimed not only in Scotland but also in the UK. It has been named the Scottish University of the Year 2019 by the Times as well as the Sunday Times Good University Guide. The QS Global World Ranking 2021 of the University of Aberdeen is 207.

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

The university offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral research-focused programmes. It is regarded among some of the top universities in the UK for multiple courses, including Engineering, Dentistry, Law, Medicine, Education and many others. Five different campuses are part of the university. Old Aberdeen, as the name suggests, is the oldest campus. It contains beautiful historically-rich buildings and is the place of study for Arts, Social Sciences and Physical Sciences scholars. The other main campus is Foster Hill, which houses the Life Sciences and Medicine facilities of the universities. Cromarty, Oceanlab and Marischal College are the three remaining campuses.

COVID-19 Response 2021

Following are updates on the teaching and learning programme at the University of Aberdeen for the AY 2021/ 222

  • The University of Aberdeen is following the current Scottish Government guidance and will resume the on-campus services with utmost safety.

  • The Scottish Government has released the ease of restrictions starting from May 17th which is ahead to bring back normality for students. The university is expected to have maximum in-person teaching and includes a wider range of student activities on campus.

  • Online classes will continue for students who cannot travel due to various restrictions or other valid reasons.

  • Social distancing, face-covering and hygiene rules shall continue to be followed for everyone who is visiting the campus university.

  • The new academic session at the University of Aberdeen shall begin in January 2022. First, half-session teaching starts from September 2021 with Welcome Week commencing on Monday 20 September.

  • International students will have to follow specific travel rules, self-isolating or quarantining rules. A student who will be unable to visit campus could be able to aces online classes with expectations on Medicine, Dentistry and Physicians Associate programmes.

Aberdeen Global Scholarship

The Aberdeen Global Scholarship to international students who are enrolled in a Master’s degree programme at the University of Aberdeen. The student must be self-funded and hold a domicile of their home country to receive the award.

The scholarship covers £2000 of the tuition fee. Additionally, students from India receive £3000 reduction in tuition fees.

Students must be enrolled in the campus programme and must not be eligible to receive an externally funded scholarship from any other courses to receive Aberdeen Global Scholarship.

There is no need to apply for a scholarship. All eligible students will receive the scholarship as a tuition fee discount.

AFZ Giles Scholarship

The AFZ Giles Scholarship is offered to undergraduate and postgraduate international students who are enrolled at the School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition at the University of Aberdeen. The scholarship preference is for students who are enrolled in a course that deals with issues directly affecting women’s health. The award is granted to students for further studies by helping them pay their fees or for their maintenance. 

Value

The value of the scholarship is £1,000.

Application 

AFZ Giles Scholarship applications are open for 2020/2021. There is no specific application for scholarship but the form must include information about the course of study, reasons for the need of funds and how the funds will be used. The application must also have a CV and a  letter of support from the student’s supervisor.

Arnold Klopper Scholarship

The Arnold Klopper Scholarship is offered to undergraduate international students who are enrolled at the School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition at the University of Aberdeen.

The scholarship preference is for students who are enrolled in a course that deals with issues directly affecting women’s health. The award is granted to students for further studies by helping them pay their fees or for their maintenance. 

Application

Boehringer Ingelheim PhD Scholarships

Boehringer Ingelheim PhD Scholarship is offered to outstanding young scientists who wish to complete their PhD projects in basic biomedical research in an internationally leading laboratory. 

The scholarship is extremely competitive as it is for students who are highly motivated towards their research work. 

Students who wish to apply for Boehringer Ingelheim PhD Scholarships must contact their supervisor at the university and apply. 

Deadlines of Application

1 February, 1 June, 1 October of each year.


 

Aberdeen Alumni Discount

This is a special loyalty discount of 20% for University of Aberdeen graduates who want to go for further study at the univesity. It applies to only Masters, Diploma, Certificate or Short course and to only a aspect of fees that requires to be self-funded and is not covered by additional funding.

Eligibility:

  • Must have completed a full degree programme as an international student at the university.

  • Must now be applying for graduate study

Value: 20% off on the full cost of a postgraduate taught programme and one year of a full-time research programme.

CB Davidson Fund

This scholarship offers financial support to postgraduate schools within the School of Law who are from outside the UK and to students of the university who wish to go outside the UK for research.

Eligibility:

  • Must have applied or are currently studying PhD/LLM by Research/LLM at the University of Aberdeen

  • Must be a member of staff from any non-UK higher education institution wishing to lecture at the University of Aberdeen.

Application Deadlines: March 31 and September 30

Value: Up to £2,500

 

Commonwealth Shared Scholarship (Selected Masters Programmes)

These scholarships are open to taught postgraduate students who are resident of a developing British Commonwealth country. A total of five students are selected for this scholarship every year.

Eligibility:

  • Must hold a first degree at first or upper second class level.

  • Must prove that student is fluent in written and oral English

  • Must already have a studied for one year or more in a developing country

  • Must prove that they require financial aid

  • Must return to their home country as soon as their award ends

  • Must be applying to programmes including MSc in Applied Marine and Fisheries Ecology, Geographical Information Systems, Environmental Science or Sustainability Transitions.

Dates:

  • Applications Start Date: February 26, 2021

  • Application Deadline: April 9, 2021

  • Announcement of Nomination: May 17, 2021

Value: 100% tuition fee waiver, a stipend worth £1,116 per month and air fares to and from the UK.

Donald Withrington Scholarship in Modern Scottish History

This is granted to only one student every year for the duration of a postgraduate degree. It may be awarded either for one year or up to three years.

Eligibility:

  • Must be a full-time applicant starting his/her campus-based postgraduate degree in any aspect of post-Reformation Scottish History in September 2021, OR

  • Must be a full-time currently enrolled in campus-based postgraduate degree in any aspect of post-Reformation Scottish History who will still be studying in 2021-22.

Application Deadline: April 30, 2021

Value: £6,000 per annum towards the cost of tuition fees and maintenance
