In a bid to resume the international education sector, Russian authorities, on 16th February 2021, announced that it will allow international students to enter the country, provided they meet the criteria.
At the onset of COVID-19, countries across the globe closed their borders to international travellers, which included, probably the most affected, international students. It is expected that over 300,000 international students were unable to travel to Russia as a result of the pandemic.
In February 2021, Russia was able to restart the in-person classes for the Spring semester, after nearly 3 months of remotely learning during the Fall Semester. Now, with the borders reopening, students will be able to begin their in-person classes in Russia.
Rospotrebnadzor, the Consumer Protection Watchdog of Russia, stated that the student international students are now permitted to enter the country for the Spring Semester, provided they meet the necessary requirements.
As per the requirements, students who hail from countries with whom Russia has struck a deal to resume international flights are allowed to enter the country. These students will be asked to provide two negative COVID-19 test results upon arrival as well.
A number of countries have signed the flight agreement with Russia, while similar agreements are being made with others. However, flights from the UK have been banned till mid-March as a result of the new COVID-strain that was found earlier this year. In total, there are 16 countries, with whom the flight agreements have been made. Indian students who wish to commence their studies in Russia will now be able to fly to the country with the new announcement.
Those students who are interested in returning to Russia will first be required to have taken the COVID-19 tests no later than three days prior to the entry into Russia. Rospotrebnadzor further added that the medical documents that confirm the negative COVID tests can be provided in both Russian or English.
