Checking in at a TOEFL Test Centre in India

TOEFL test centres in India lays down some particular requirements for applicants to follow while appearing for the test. They must abide by it for a smooth examination process and any failure to do so will lead to disqualification from the exam. Here are certain instructions that candidates require to follow while checking in at the TOEFL test centres in India:

• Carry an approved identity card that has a photograph and signature. The name printed on the ID must match the one on the identity card.

• Give signature and handwriting samples.

• Pictures will be taken at the test centres which will be further displayed at the computer stations and put in your score reports.

• You must keep your face thoroughly visible throughout the exam.

• Your ears also must be seen and avoid using earphones or headsets when not required.

• A staff member might check your eyeglasses if you are wearing one.

• You must cooperate with the staff when your head covering is removed for inspection.

• You must also pull your pants above your ankle, pull up your sleeves and empty your pockets so that everything can be inspected well before entering the test centre.

Some TOEFL exam centres may ask candidates to adhere to additional measures such as:

• There can be video monitoring of the test centre.

• Fingerprinting and thumbprinting.

• ID with an electronic chip fitted on it.

• Use of electronic detection scanning services such as handheld metal detectors and wands.

• Use of biometric voice and photo identification.

• Visual inspection for unauthorised testing aids and other wearable technologies.

ID Requirements for the TOEFL Test

In India, candidates must show a valid passport as their primary ID. The same must have the name, signature and photograph of the candidate. Failure to produce the passport would lead to the candidate not being allowed to take the test. 

General ID Document Requirements for TOEFL

Your ID document must meet all the following requirements:

• It must be an original document

• It must be valid

• It must be a government-issued national or state identification card that recognises the candidate as a resident of the country

• It must include a recent photograph

• It must include the full name of the candidate, as mentioned in the registration document

• It should also include the signature of the candidate.

Unacceptable ID Documents at TOEFL Test Centre

Documents that are unacceptable at any TOEFL 2023 test centre in India include the following:

• Credit/debit card of any kind

• Draft classification card

• International driver's license

• Notary-prepared letter or document

• International student ID

• Employee ID card

• Birth certificate

• Social Security card

• Diplomatic, consulate or embassy ID card

• Any temporary ID card

Students are discouraged from possessing any such document while they appear for the examination.

TOEFL Test Centre Accommodations for Test Takers with Disabilities

ETS, the conducting body of TOEFL, is committed to providing accommodations to test takers who have disabilities or health-related needs. They aim to give maximum help and comfort to test takers. The TOEFL test centre accommodations for test takers with disabilities are given below:

• Extended test time is provided to students. They can request to extend test time by 25%, 50% and 100% depending upon the disability.

• Extra breaks are provided for medication, snacks or going to the washroom.

• Screen magnification and selectable background and foreground colours for the computer-based TOEFL exam are available.

• A human reader and a scribe are available.

• An oral interpreter and a sign language interpreter assist deaf and dumb candidates.

• Alternate Test Formats like braille,  large-print test book,  large-print answer sheet and recorded audio are available.

• Listening and speaking sections are omitted for deaf and dumb test-takers.

How to Request TOEFL Accommodations?

TOEFL accommodations can be requested by disabled test-takers by following the steps given below:

• Step 1: You need to complete the Testing Accommodation Request Form available on the website or TOEFL iBT Registration Form for Test Takers with Disabilities or Health-related Needs if you are not submitting your materials online.

• Step 2: Submit disability documents.

• Step 3: Submit the completed form.

You should submit the request as early as possible as it may take up to six weeks for documentation review. Once your request is approved, you will receive a mail providing instructions to register for the test.

How to File Complaints about TOEFL Test Centres?

In case a candidate has any complaints regarding TOEFL centers, he/she can send an email to toefl@ets.org no later than five days after taking the test. The candidate should include his/her name, registration number, test date, name, and city and country where they took the test.
