Saint Marys University is one of the top 50 universities of Canada situated in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It was originally founded in 1802 as a college which was upgraded into an university by the Charter of 1840, bestowed by the Nova Scotia Legislature. The Archbishop of Halifax, Cornelius OBrien revived the university in 1903 from the collapse it suffered in 1883. The institution is known for its elite reputation as a primarily undergraduate university and has been ranked as 4th by Maclean in undergraduate universities category. In the present times the university has affiliations with Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC), International Association of Universities (IAU), Universities of the Arctic (UArctic), Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), Canadian University Society for Intercollegiate Debate (CUSID) and Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE). It has active partnerships with 106 international institutions.
Infrastructure, Campus and Courses
The 80-acrecampus area of the institution comprises 16 different infrastructure buildings and areas serving to varying purposes. The buildings cater to academic, residential, sports facilities, stadiums, libraries, society, faculty and departmental buildings. The university offersits studentsvarious undergraduate degrees to choose from basic three faculties of Arts, Science and Business and 27 graduate (including 5 Doctorates) degrees and programs. The undergraduate programs offered by the institution include subjects such as Asian Studies, Intercultural Studies, Global Business Management, Astrophysics, Forensic Sciences, Psychology, etc. While graduate majors include Criminology, Theology and Religious Studies, Women and Gender Studies, Technology Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Applied Economics, Astronomy, etc.
Accomplishments and Alumni
Saint Marys University has expanded the realm of its accomplishments beyond the academic ones. Academically, the institutions Faculty of Graduate and Research set up the Office of Innovation and Research (OICE) in 2005. It is also involved with Canadian Research Chairs (CRC). The institution boasts itssports legacy and is the house of the best Womens Basketball programs. The resident football team is the famed Huskies and has sports affiliations with USports (CIS) and Atlantic University Sport (AUS). There is a visible and successful sensitivity regarding issues like Animal Care and Ethics. The alumni of the university include names such as John William Ashe, Kori Cheverie, Mal Davis, Chris Flynn, Andy Jones, Terry Kelly, Wilfred Moore.
Student Diversity and Visiting Companies
The Office of Innovation and Community Management is responsible for smooth relationships and conversations of the university. The international students population of the university is about 29% and has students representing over 118 countries. There are options available for students to opt for off campus living and guidance is provided in how to tackle the matters beyond the boundaries of the university. While within university all possible amenities from leisure to health are available for the students and also communal harmony is promoted. There is a separate portal where recruitment guidance and services are provided to the students for future and the manner in which they can properly shape their further career.
