Chartered in 1821 by an Act of the United States Congress, the George Washington University (GW or GWU) is a private research university in Washington, D.C. The University is Academically affiliated with the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area (CUWMA), the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU), Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) and The Southeastern Universities Research Association (SURA). GW is ranked 25th in the Top Universities for Producing Billionaires 2016-2017, by Times Higher Education's World University Rankings, which also ranks GW as 51st in the Top 100 Universities for Producing Millionaires in the world. According to the U.S. News & World Report 2020, GW's international business programme has been ranked as the 8th best in the world, its MBA programme as the 51st best, and its undergraduate business programme as the 38th best.
Infrastructure, Campus & Courses
The George Washington University has 3 fully integrated campuses in the D.C. area, which include the Foggy Bottom Campus, the Mount Vernon Campus, and the Virginia Science & Technology Campus. The main 43 acres (170,000 m2) in historic Foggy Bottom campus under GWU, is located a few blocks from the White House. It offers degree programs in 71 disciplines, enrolling an average of 11,000 undergraduate and 15,500 post-graduate students from more than 130 countries. GW is the largest higher education institution in Washington D.C. As a leading research university, GW promotes the advancement of human knowledge across disciplines and throughout its 10 schools, 100 research centers, and an expansive system of libraries. The most famous majors at GW include Social Sciences; Business, Management, Marketing, Health Professions and Related Programs, and Related Support Services.
Accomplishments & Alumni
As of 2015, George Washington had one of the largest feeder schools for the diplomatic corps, with over 1,100 active alumni in the U.S. Foreign Service. George Washington alumni, faculty and affiliates include numerous prominent politicians, including 16 heads of state or government, current Fortune 500 CEOs, Nobel laureates, U.S. Cabinet members, Academy Award and Golden Globe winners, MacArthur fellows, Olympic athletes, royalty, and Time 100 notables. GW University has a list of notable alumni that include Shahid Abbasi (21st Prime Minister of Pakistan), Kun-Hee Lee (Chairman of Samsung), William Barr (Present Attorney General of the United States), J. William Fulbright (Founder of Fulbright Program), and Julius Axelrod (Nobel Prize in Medicine)
Student Diversity & Visiting Companies
There are approximately 14,000 graduate students and 10,000 full-time undergraduates studying at George Washington University. These students travel from almost 50 states and over 120 various countries. On the other hand, nearly 900 students participate in GW's Study Abroad Programmes each semester in 50 different countries across the globe. GW University has many international students flying down from countries like the United Kingdom, France, Brazil, Vietnam, Mexico, South Korea and Germany.
