The University of Santo Tomas is Asia's oldest existing university. The institution was established through the initiative of Bishop Miguel de Benavides, O.P., third Archbishop of Manila. In 1611, the University of Santo Tomas was established under the patronage of St. Thomas Aquinas. The university is one of the worlds largest Roman Catholic universities. The university is accredited by NMC (National Medical Commission), WHO (World Health Organisation), and CHED (Commission of Higher Education) makes it appealing to foreign students. The university is one of the worlds largest Roman Catholic universities. UST is one of the Philippines' top 5 universities and consistently ranked among the top 1000 universities in the whole world.

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

The University of Santo Tomas offers an MBBS course which is accredited by the NMC and WHO. The university also offers MD at the postgraduate level. To make education accessible to every student, the University of Santo Tomas teaches the course in English. The campus of the University of Santo Tomas is located in the city of Manila, Philippines. It is in close proximity to shopping centres, parks, and eating joints. The Main Building of UST is declared National Cultural Treasures by the National Museum of the Philippines. The University of Santo Tomas has been named as one of the member institutions of the Philippine Higher Education Research Network (PHERNET). It was designated by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to host a Zonal Research Center (ZRC) for the National Capital Region in April 2010 for a period of one year. UST research projects receive grants from various external local and international agencies such as: Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Global Development Network (GDN), International Federation of Catholic Universities Center for Coordination of Research (IFCU-CCR) among others. It has 18 departments in the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery.
