GRE Exam Fee in India 2023

The GRE fees depend on the test type as an exam taken by the study abroad aspirant as well as the country from which the test is being taken. Therefore, the GRE exam fee in India is different from that charged in other countries such as the USA, UK, Canada, Turkey, Australia etc. 

The GRE registration fee in India 2023 is USD 228 which translates to approximately INR 18,796 as per the current conversion rates. As the cost is heavily influenced by exchange rates students might have to pay a different amount depending on when they are booking the test.

On the other hand, the GRE subject test registration fee is USD 150 which is INR 12, 357. ETS charges extra bucks for providing different services such as late registration, test centre change, etc.

Worldwide GRE Exam Fees

The GRE exam fee fluctuates based on the country from which the GRE registration is done. It is an essential doubt among students that what the fees are in their country. GRE Home Test Exam Fee

GRE at Home was launched by ETS during the Covid-19 pandemic and its popularity has been increasing since then. You can take the GRE exam from the safety of your home.

Moreover, ETS does not charge any additional fees for home-based exams. 

Notably, the GRE General Test fee and GRE at Home fee are the same, which is USD 228 for Indian students. However, in order to access other facilities such as rescheduling, getting extra score reports and others from GRE, you have to pay additional fees.

Types of GRE Exam Fee

GRE Special Handling Requests Fee

If you desire to reschedule your GRE General Test registrations must do so at least four days prior to the test date, otherwise, the GRE fee will be forfeited. You will also be required to pay USD 50 in order to reschedule your GRE test. 

In addition, you will have to pay a USD 50 GRE Subject Change Fee if you want to change a subject on the GRE Subject Test. Candidates who want to use additional services will have to pay an additional GRE exam fee. The following are the GRE exam fee for special handling requests for services for late registration, changing test centres or rescheduling the test.  

GRE Cancellation Fee

If you need to cancel your GRE General Test, you must do so at least four days before the test date to be eligible for a refund equal to half of the GRE exam fee. Having said that, please keep in mind that there are no cash refunds, and the refund amount will be paid back to the original credit/debit card or bank account used to make the payment. You will have to visit the website of the ETS and click on “Cancel Appointment”. 

The approximate value of the refund is USD 102.5 (~ INR 7,945). Even after cancelling your GRE exam, you will have the option to take the exam later.

If you are sick on the exam day, you would not be eligible to get a full refund. You will get exam vouchers that will allow you to take a test on a different day at no extra cost. The request must be submitted prior to the exam date.

GRE Score Reporting Fee

When you register for the GRE, the GRE fee includes sending your scores to four universities/institutions. If you want to send your GRE score to more than four universities, you can do so by paying an additional GRE exam fee, also known as the GRE score sending fee.

GRE Fee Reduction Program

Want to know how to get a GRE voucher?. Students can avail of a reduction of GRE fees which can be up to 50%. The coupon given can be used to waive the fees for both GRE General Test and GRE Subject Tests. One can also access free study materials worth USD 100 with the coupons.

Unfortunately, the GRE voucher facility is not available for international students. Only US citizens or permanent residents can make use of the fee reduction facility. 

That said, those with demonstrated financial needs, unemployed individuals with employment compensations and under-represented or first-time college goers can be a part of the GRE fee reduction program.

Payment Methods for GRE Exam Fee in India

Now, as you have a clear idea about GRE exam fees and the GRE fee reduction program, you must also know the payment methods for the exam fees payable to take the test. ETS, the conducting body of GRE, has made available the following payment options to complete the fee payment process:

• Credit/Debit Card (American Express, China UnionPay, Diners Club International, Discover, JCB, MasterCard, and Visa).

• PayPal

• E-Check Service (drawn against US bank accounts only)

• Money Order/Certified Cheque/Authorisation Voucher

• Personal paper cheques can also be used to make payments. Make cheques payable to ETS-GRE (drawn against US bank accounts only). If you're paying by cheque, make sure you do the following:

  • The name and address of the bank should be preprinted on the face of the cheque

  • A cheque number must be preprinted on the cheque

  • The cheque must include the name and address of the candidate or payee

  • The cheque date must not be older than 90 days

  • Cheques for new bank accounts that do not have the preprinted name and address are not acceptable

• Option of e-cheque is also available only if it is drawn against a U.S. bank account.

Important Note: ETS does not accept cash payments. Also, if sufficient funds are not there in the account to pay the fees and ETS has provided the services to candidates, then an additional USD 30 will be added to the account.
