Mount Allison was founded in January 1843 and was named in honour of Charles Frederick Allison for his donation. Originally established as a boys college it made way for a girls institution in 1854 and eventually became the first university under the rule of the British Empire to grant undergraduate degree to a woman, Grace Annie Lockhart. The university is ranked among the top 50 universities of Canada, 2nd best undergraduate university and Best university in case of scholarships and bursaries. The university has to its students credit 55 Rhodes Scholarships. Moreover, the institution is affiliated with Maple league of Universities, Universities Canada, IAU, ACU, CIS, CBIE, AUS andc CUP.
Infrastructure, Campus and Courses
The campus of Mount Allison is recognised as Canadas best in terms of architecture and aesthetics. Moreover due to early establishment and regular development the campus is now an amalgamation of modern and historical establishments. There are academic faculties and departments through which the university offers to its student 50+ programs in both undergraduate and graduate level of education. There are eight residential buildings and campus is additionally home to Owens Art Gallery and modern atriums and libraries. The institution provides art studios, theatre for dramatics and laboratories for sciences and research to its students.
Accomplishments and Alumni
The student endowment funds of the university amount to $215.15 million, the campus was famously the first under the British Empire to provide undergraduate education to a woman and offers its students degrees in a variety of programs. The institution has collaborated with Moncton Flight College to provide a Major in Aviation. The university has in its name certain important sports competition wins in both men and women category, and focuses on research in areas such as Aquatic Sciences, Climate Change, Visual and Material Culture, etc. Some of the notable alumni include Grace Annie Lockhart, Kate Beaton, Erminie Cohen, Frank Parker Day, Sheila A. Hellstrom, Jimmy Kemp, Ivan Rand and Mary Mellish.
Student Diversity and Visiting Companies
The university has an international population amounting to 12% and adheres to the guidelines of NBHRA, CCRF and United Nations. There are teams provided and authorised by the administration of the university to implement Anti-racism measures, and conduct sessions and seminars under Diversity and Black Student Educator campaign. There is an International Centre set up in the campus for the international students to feel at ease and easily convey their grievances and solutions. In order to assure the LGBTQ identifying students constant efforts are made to create Positive Spaces within the university. Although the university has to itself global accreditation it still guides its students into internships, career counselling and alumni career mentorships.
