Overview

History, Affiliations & Rankings

First Nations University derives its name out of its purpose of serving the indigenous and non-indigenous communities. FNUniv was established in 1976 as a result of the agreement between University of Regina and Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations. The purpose of the college was to provide education related to the culture, history, origins and spiritual roots of the First Nations. At the time of foundation it was named Saskatchewan Indian Federated College which was changed to FNUniv in 2003. In the present times the institution operates through three campuses in Regina, Saskatoon and Prince Albert. It also has independent academic affiliation with the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC).

Infrastructure, Campus and Courses

All three campuses of FNUniv are equipped with libraries (related to courses offered by the campus), book stores, clubs, parking areas, meal plans, residences, career counselling offices, and other service providing outlets. The college currently offers nine undergraduate degrees in various indigenous programs, four graduate degrees in indigenous programs, eight community and web based programs (partnership based; semester wise), and certificates in ten reconciliation studies programs and courses. In view of the community based education base of college the institution is recipient of Government Funding and Grants.

Accomplishments and Alumni

The university is accomplished in fields of indigeous community building and support. The effects which the administration of college has made in this respect include setting up of a Child Care Centre and setting up of Memorial Tipi for the First Nations veterans who served in World War I for the U.S. and Canada. The institution also has a Ceremonial Tipi for the benefit of students. Each campus has its own Student Union. Some notable alumni of the college include Brad Bellegarde, Raven Sinclair, Jada Yee, Jennifer Dubois and Gisele George.

Student Diversity and Visiting Companies

As it is ingrained in the very foundation of the institution, community is regarded as an important part of the university and is revered as the same. The administration even provides support services to the elders of aboriginal community and also has the veterans and elders participate and lead the Ceremonial Tipi. There is a visible change in the balance shift in favour of mental wellness in hand with physical and health wellness. FNUniv provides counselling and career support to the students during and beyond their student life with the institution.
