Founded in 1959 by Murry G. Ross, York University is known to be a key player among universities in Ontario, Canada. Formerly comprising Glendon (a residential college), Atkinson (an evening college) and Keele (an urban campus), York today is the third-largest university in Canada. The university is affiliated with a number of international, national and regional recognised organisations such as The Council of Ontario Universities (COU), Universities Canada, International Association of Universities (IAU), among others. York University is ranked 33rd out of 767 universities in the Times Higher Education Global Impact Rankings. Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2021 also ranked York in the 401500 band globallyand in the 1718 rank band nationally.

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

With a total of three campuses in Toronto, York University boasts various state-of-the-art infrastructure and natural landscapes. Glendon, the founding campus of the university sits on 35 hectares and the Keele Campus is spread over an area of 500 acres. In addition, the university also includes the new Markham Centre Campus along with two global campuses in Hyderabad, India; and southern Costa Rica. York offers more than 200 flexible and innovative programmes in a variety of fields ranging from accounting to creative writing. Its 11 faculties and schools deliver a world-class education using cross-discipline programming and evolving technologies.

Accomplishments & Alumni

York University has a huge network of more than 325,000 alumni with 25,000+ overseas and a large number of them in British Columbia, New York, Ontario, Washington D.C, Alberta and Nova Scotia. The university is best known for its Distinguished Research Professors and University Professors which are the highest ranks awarded to a professor at the university. York is associated with notable graduates who have worked/are still working as politicians, scientists, athletes, broadcasters, business leaders, and many more. Some of these prominent York alumni include John Black Aird, Steve MacLean, Jim Flaherty, Rachel McAdams, Lilly Singh, Jagmeet Singh and Lincoln Alexander.

The student body of the university includes around 18% of students from outside Canada. York University Scholarships for Undergraduate International Students

Entrance Scholarships

Few of the York University entrance scholarships require an application and few don’t as for most of them, one is automatically considered. York University Automatic Entrance Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of the final admission average:

  • 95%+  — $4,000 (renewable for 3 additional years)*

  • 90-94.9%  — $2,500

  • 85-89.9%  — $1,500

  • 80-84.9%  — $1,000

One can renew the same by maintaining a minimum 8.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) over a minimum of 24 credits taken during the entire academic year (previous Summer and Fall/Winter sessions).

Other entrance scholarships are programme-specific, which can award upto $10,000.

For entrance scholarships that require an application, applicants must submit the International Student Scholarship & Award Application form by February 1. The same shall be based on an exceptional academic profile and excellence in arts or sports. The value of these scholarships is subject to change. These scholarships include the International Entrance Scholarship of Distinction ($1,40,000), Global Leader of Tomorrow Award for International Students ($80,000), International Circle of Scholars Scholarship ($15,000) and York University Academic Excellence Scholarships for International Students ($5,000-10,000) 

York University Continuing Student Scholarships

The scholarship is open for continuing students who have achieved remarkable results in the previous academic sessions. It is awarded every year with a value that is proportionate to the level of achievement and course load. Students do not need to submit a separate application for the scholarship.

International Student Bursary

Available for international students, the bursary is for those who are in need of financial help due to unexpected circumstances. It is completely based on the student’s academic performance. The bursary has been introduced to cover immediate and small costs that would not cover tuition fee payments. 

Eligibility:

  • Must have a good academic record

  • Must not be in the first year of study

  • Must have a valid international student permit

  • Must be enrolled in a full-time/part-time undergraduate degree and courses at the time of application.

York University Scholarships for Graduate International Students

York University offers a number of scholarship opportunities to international students applying for graduate programmes. These awards are programme-specific which might or might not require a separate application. The value and deadline of these scholarships will vary from each other. Some of the popular scholarships offered by York to international students applying to Master’s programmes are Anne Simone Graduate Student International Conference Award, Howard Daugherty International Graduate Award in Neotropical Conservation, Armand and Denise LaBarge Graduate Scholarship in Multiculturalism and Provost Dissertation Scholarship.
