Canada: International Talent Crucial For Economic Recovery Post Pandemic

In a bid to recover from the economic damages of the pandemic, Colleges and Institutes Canada released a statement highlighting the importance of attracting international talent and students, while also highlighting how citizenship could be facilitated to these international talent.

The importance of the international education sector has been released over the past year. With the onset of the pandemic, countries across the globe were forced to shut down their borders to international students.

In this respect, Colleges and Institutes Canada has suggested the recruitment of international talent to recover from the economic damages of the pandemic. It further suggested that various institutions across the nation work as pathways to labour market to facilitate the recovery process as well.

Among the roles that Colleges and Institutes in Canada could take part in the economic recovery of the nation, CICan stated that its members can train, both international students and new migrants to transition to work in the labour market of the country, while also facilitating in meeting the needs of each student and different communities in the country.

A statement from CICan highlighted the importance educators hold in developing the skills a student requires to to succeed in these unprecedented times. The educators can also help in meeting the labour market needs by attracting more international students, thus helping them move towards citizenship and labour markets as well. Educators will also be help existing immigrants to upgrade or develop their skills, transform their foreign credentials or even overhaul their careers.

CICan further stated that the growth and development of businesses, especially SMEs, is crucial in building a resilient, sustainable and green economy. By taking advantage of the applied research capabilities in colleges and institutions, these business will be able to aid in the recovery of the economy.

The statement from CICan further highlighted that the ageing population of Canada is leading to a shortage in labour, which can be solved through immigration. They pointed out the importance of safely opening up of the borders to invite international talent to fill in the skill gaps in different sectors, thus meeting the needs of the Canadian employers.

A large number of immigrants are students studying in the different colleges and institutions in the country. Among these international students, many of them wish to work and settle down in Canada and also apply for citizenship or permanent residence.

Marco E. L. Mendicino, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship in Canada, announced that the IRCC will be accepting applications for permanent residence from December 14, 2020 onwards. This provision will currently be applicable for refugees working healthcare and provide direct healthcare to patients.

Mendicino further highlighted that international students are included in the attractive pool of qualified talent that can be used for the rebuilding of the Canadian economy. Therefore, Canada may soon start working on attracting more international talent and students.
