Algoma University was initially founded as a college in 1965 and was affiliated with Laurentian University in Sudbury. It received its university status in 2008 and today Algoma U is a fully autonomous university in Ontario. Algoma U or Algoma is a public university and the main campus for Algoma University is located in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada. Algoma U has been established to offer academic courses to meet the requirements of students and employers alike. The vision of the university is not to be a leader in academic excellence but also to provide cross-cultural learning experiences to students from different backgrounds and ethnicities from different parts of the world.

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

Algoma University has three campuses - The Sault Ste. Marie campus, the Timmins campus and the Brampton campus. The university campus is situated in a vibrant city that is well-connected to cities and regions nearby and is the centre for several businesses and services. One can also find various facilities in and out of Algoma Us campuses like restaurants, parks, shopping malls, art, culture and entertainment centres. Algoma University offers a variety of academic degree programmes under different fields of studies such as three faculties namely the School of Business Economics, School of Computer Science and Technology, School of Life Sciences and the Environment and School of Social Work. Algoma U also offers a number of certificate and online learning courses as well as programmes for Experiential Learning among other courses.

Accomplishments & Alumni

Algoma University conducts an annual award ceremony to recognise the accomplishments and achievements of its alumni. The students achievements in a chosen field, their leadership qualities and commitment to serve the community is considered when the university chooses to award and recognise its graduates. The Algoma University Alumni Council is a community built to maintain a lifelong connection with its alma mater. It encourages its former students to actively participate in the university events and activities and also promote and influence the masses to maintain the international recognition of Algoma University.

Algoma University's student population forms a rich diversity and the university ensures that each student gains an enjoyable experience throughout the duration of their studies. Algoma University Entrance Scholarships

International students who are required to pay the international fee differential, i.e., second-degree students, university transfers, college diploma and college transfer students are eligible for the entrance scholarships. The international scholarships will not be deferred under any circumstances. Students must accept the terms and conditions of admission and scholarship awarded for the year in which the scholarship is awarded.
 

Chancellor's Award

International students entering the first year of study at the University will be considered eligible for the scholarship. The award is renewable for a period of three years, provided the candidates maintain an average of 80% each year, and 24 credits over two consecutive fall or winter terms. Failure of meeting the requirements in any of the years will lead to subsequent cancellation of the scholarship and the student will be deemed unqualified for the same.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Candidates must be enrolled in full-time courses with 30 credits over two consecutive terms of study.

  • Students are required to maintain a minimum average of A+ or equivalent in the previous academic reports.

  • Candidates must qualify a language requirement on admission to be eligible for the scholarship.

    • Cambridge Assessment of English - Overall score of 185

    • IELTS - overall score of 7.0 with a band-wise score of 6 or higher.

    • TOEFL - Overall score of 560 or 85 in TOEFL iBT

    • Pearson Test of English (Academic) - 65

    • Duolingo Test of English - 125

Award Value: $5,000

President’s Award

The President’s Award is another entrance scholarship offered to international students entering the first year of study at the University. Students will not be able to renew this scholarship.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Candidates will be considered eligible for the scholarship if the students are able to maintain an average country-equivalent grade of A, as per the grading scale of Algoma U.

  • Candidates must have enrolled in a full-time course with 24-30 credits over two consecutive terms of study.

Award Value: $2,500

 

Dean’s Award

International students enrolled in a study programme at the university will be eligible for the scholarship if they maintain a certain country-equivalent grade, as per the Algoma University grading scale. This entrance scholarship is non-renewable.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Students who have completed the previous academic programmes with a minimum country-equivalent grade of B, as per the Algoma U grading scale, will be considered eligible for the scholarship.

  • Students will also be required to have enrolled in a full-time study programme, consisting of 24-30 credits over two consecutive study terms.

Award Value: $1,000

Award of Excellence

 

Algoma University confers the Award of Excellence to international students joining the first year of study at Algoma University. The students must have completed the previous academic programme with a minimum country-equivalent grade B, as per the grading scale of Algoma University.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Candidates must enrol in a full-time programme at Algoma University with 24-30 credits over two study terms.

  • Candidates must have secured a country-equivalent grade of B, as per the grading scale of Algoma U in the previous academic programmes.
