Simon Fraser University was founded in 1965 which was named after a fur trader and explorer, Simon Fraser. It is the first Canadian University which has got U.S. recognition. The university got a formal letter for establishment on March 1, 1963, in Burnaby. Gorden M. Shrum was the first Chancellor of the university who was appointed in the same year the university was established. The 2020 Times Higher Education World University Rankings ranked it at # 251–300 in the world and #11–14 in Canada. SFU was granted accreditation on 1 September 2015 by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) which is an independent, non-profit agency.

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

Simon Fraser University is an open research university in British Columbia, Canada with a campus size of 430 acres. It has 3 more campuses that are in Burnaby, Surrey, and Vancouver. The Burnaby campus is the main campus and it is home to the main departments of the university. Also, this campus has two gyms, a swimming pool, and a library named WAC which is the largest of all the 3 libraries of the university. In 2009, the campus was awarded for Lieutenant Governor Awards for Architecture. Moreover, the university provides accommodation within the campus with a hotel facility for family members paying a visit. The most popular courses are Computer Science, Business, Engineering, Psychology and Social Sciences.

Accomplishments & Alumni

Dr. Robert Cameron, a professor in the School of Computing Science, has been awarded a Google Faculty Research Award. The award is in support of Dr. Cameron's Research Proposal entitled "Unicode Level 2 Support in Parabix Regular Expression Matching". Researchers from Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia, including Dr. Fred Popowich and Dr. Anoop Sarkar, collaborated with industry partners to launch the Vancouver Institute for Visual Analytics with a $1.25-million investment from the Boeing Co. The new institute will help Vancouver become a major center for innovation in visual analytics. Notable alumni include Mahamudu Bawumia (Vice-President of Ghana), Carol Huynh (Gold Medalist in Olympic Games), and Ed Hill (Stand-Up Comedian). 

Student Diversity & Visiting Companies

As of September 2017, SFU has approximately 4,908 international undergraduate students and 1,379 international graduate students for a total of over 6,285 international students. Full-time international students represent 19% of the total undergraduate population and 28% of the graduate population. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 25,649. The companies visiting for recruitment and internships are Wal-Mart Global Procurement, Qualcomm, Boston Scientific, Capvis AG,  Zydus Group and many more.
