The University of Massachusetts Amherst was founded in 1863 as the Massachusetts Agricultural College and it started offering its first classes in 1867. The university has steadily evolved and expanded over the years to become a nationally-ranked public research university. The University of Massachusetts Amherst is located in Amherst, Massachusetts in the scenic Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts which is 90 miles from Boston and 175 miles from New York. It is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) and is ranked among the top 25 of the nation’s premier public universities in the best colleges 2020 guide published by the U.S. News & World Report. In addition, it stands out as a world-class leader in the field of research and innovation.   

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

University of Massachusetts, Amherst campus is spread across an area of 1450 acres. The campus provides a rich cultural environment set in a rural region yet close to the major urban centre. UMass Ahmerst has a total of nine schools and colleges to offer courses in various disciplines at different levels. All the schools offer a wide range of undergraduate majors, master’s and doctoral degree courses with an emphasis on research. In total, it offers 109 bachelor’s, 78 master's and 48 doctoral programmes across 29 academic disciplines ranked among the top 200 global programs. The university also has a Fine Arts Centre and six galleries to promote arts and culture.

Accomplishments & Alumni

UMass has over 250,000 alumni around the world which include four Nobel Prize laureates, numerous Fullbright, Goldwater, Gates, Truman and Churchill scholars, Olympic Gold Medalists, Academy Award winners and more. Some of the notable UMass alumni include Russell Hulse, Nobel Prize winner in Physics; NASA astronaut Catherine Coleman; US Air Force General Gen Andrew Iosue; former co-CEO and co-chairman of Deutsche Bank Anshuman Jain, among others. The University of Massachusetts Amherst is recognized for its excellence in academic and research programmes based on various factors like academic reputation, graduation rate performance, faculty members, involvement of alumni, reviews and ratings. The steady growth of the university to become one of the prominent universities of the nation reflects the excellence and innovative thinking of the faculty and students. 

Students Diversity & Employment Opportunities

In Fall 2020, a total of 24,233 undergraduate and 7,409 graduate students were enrolled in the UMass Amherst. The full-time instructional faculty at the university is more than 1,400 and international students at the university represent more than 70 countries.
