Established in 1895, Wichita State University is a state research institution located in the largest city of Kansas. It is known to be the most affordable research university in Kansas with a long history of entrepreneurship and innovation. It began in 1886 as Fairmount College, a private Congregational institution, which was initially called “Young Ladies College”. Popularly known as WSU, the university has held accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (HLC-NCA) since 1926. WSU is one of three research institutions in the state of Kansas, along with Kansas State University (KSU) and the University of Kansas (KU).

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

WSU’s 330-acre campus is situated 5 miles to the Southwest, in the heart of the midwest in the city of Wichita. The university has six satellite locations in WSU West, WSU Haysville, WSU Old Town- A, WSU Old Town- B, WSU Old Town- C, and WSU South. WSU’s largest residence hall, Shocker Hall is centrally located and houses over 700 students, a 400-seat dining hall and a coffee shop. With myriad undergraduate, graduate, online and certificate programmes, the university comprises  a total of 9 colleges and schools for diverse fields of study including applied studies, health, liberal arts and sciences, engineering, fine arts, and so on.

Accomplishments & Alumni

Wichita State University is associated with a great number of notable people who have not only served as university presidents but have also gained success in sports, academia, business, literature, media, music, among other fields. WSU is also popular for having produced individuals who have served the government as Assistant Secretary of the Army, member of US Secret Service,  Foreign Service Officer, member of the Kansas House of Representatives and so on. Some popular personalities produced by the university include Dan and Frank Carney (co-founders of Pizza Hut), Sandiaga Uno (former Lieutenant Governor of Jakarta), Shirley Knight (Oscar-nominated actress), and Ron Baker (NBA player with the New York Knicks).

WSU’s Shockers come from 110 countries, making it one of the most racially and ethnically diverse college campuses. More than 40 percent of Wichita State’s students are first-generation students. The university is among the highest first-year employment rates for graduates working in Kansas. With applied learning for every major, WSU students working in the state have a reputation of earning more than other state universities. Some of the leading recruiters who have visited WSU in the past include Textron Aviation, McConnell Air Force Base, Koch Industries Inc., AGCO Corp., Spirit AeroSystems Inc., Via Christi Health, and many more.
