Stony Brook University is a public research university in New York and a part of the State University of New York system. Founded in 1957 in Oyster Bay on Long Island, it was later moved to Stony Brook in 1962. It is among R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity. SUNY Stony Brook is academically affiliated to the Association of American Universities (AAU), Universities Research Association (URA), Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (UPLA). The institution is ranked #91 in National Universities by US News 2020.
 
Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

The main campus of SUNY Stony Brook is in the north shore hamlet of Stony Brook which is subdivided into “West Campus” and “East Campus” by County Road 97. Stony Brook University has a modern campus that stretches for more than a quarter-mile. Academic Mall is the center of the university campus which includes the student Activity Center, Frank Melville Jr. Memorial Library, Staller center of Arts, Physics building, Math tower and many more. There is a separate facility for Engineering and Computing Science related departments. A mile away from the center of the campus on the stony brook road is the Research and Development Park and Advanced Energy Research and Technology center for aspiring and innovative minds. 

There are two other campuses, Southampton and Manhattan. The entire major undergraduate (200 academic courses) and graduate programs are available in the university. Overall 26,814 students were enrolled for fall 2019 intake.   

Accomplishments & Alumni 

Various scientific discoveries and research have taken place in the university. During the year 1969, scientists created a new ultrasound method that speeds the healing of the fractured bones. The first MRI image of a living organism was created in 1974 and the formulation of supergravity was discovered in 1976. In 2002, researchers at Stony Brook University synthesized the first virus, in vitro, Polio. Prominent alumni include photographer Jon Oringer, American Academic and Diplomat  Robert L. Gallucci, and Meteorologist Craig Allen.

The male student to female student ratio is 56% to 44% and students are enrolled from all across the globe with students coming from different backgrounds come together and feel valued. The university hosts racial diversity with approximately 28% of student body are Asians. Others include White 30%, International 17%, Hispanic or Latino 10%, African/ Black American 7% and others 8%. Top organizations which hire students from SUNY Stony Brook are AT&T, CanonUSA, GEICO, Enterprise Holding, Target, Barclays, Morgan Stanley, and Goldman Sachs.
