Kazan Federal University, a public research university, is the second oldest university in Russia. It was founded in 1804 when the Charter about the creation of the Kazan Imperial University was signed by Emperor Alexander I. It was only in 2010, when the university received a federal status and became part of the Project 5-100 coordinated by the Russian government. According to the QS World University Rankings 2020, KFU is ranked among the top 400 universities across the world. In the QS Stars Evaluation System, it has also been rated five plus overall. The Times Higher Education Rankings places KFU within the range of 601-800 among the top universities in the world and at the 10th position in Russia. In addition, the university is ranked 9th in Russia and within 901-1000 in the world in the Academic Ranking of World Universities.

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

Located in Kazan, Russia, Kazan Federal University is spread across an area of 882 thousand m including 726 real estate items and 100 land plots, amounting to a total of 245 hectares. Further, it comprises 415 laboratories, a university clinic, 13 institutes, three higher schools, one faculty, two regional branches, 11 sports and cultural facilities, 29 international academic and research centres, a well-equipped library, around 4,000 highly-qualified faculty members and more. At present, KFU offers over 700 degree programs in a variety of disciplines and 10 double-degree courses in collaboration with partner universities. It is, in fact, one of the few institutions in the country, which offers modern comfortable accommodation to over 12,000 people. With the main campus located in downtown Kazak, the university has premises in Tatarstan, Karelia, Mari El, Karachay-Cherkessia, among others.

Today, KFU has 50,000+ students enrolled in programs at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Since its inception, the university has prepared more than 70,000 professionals who have made their mark across a wide range of fields. One of the famous names associated with Kazan Federal University is Ivan Simonov who participated in the discovery of Antarctica and introduced the study of Antarctica. Other notable alumni of the university include Leo Tolstoy, Vladimir Lenin, Alexander Butlerov, Nickolay Zini, Sergei Aksakov and many more. It also prides itself on a total of 12 international scientific collaborations, 25 international scientific units and six scientific journals in Scopus and WoS. KFU has also engaged in different forms of international cooperation, for which it is known as a centre of academic excellence.
