The UK government may allow international students to work up to 30 hours per week or waive this cap entirely to boost its economy. Indian students in UK may now be allowed to take up more part-time jobs or work for longer hours while concurrently completing their education.

UK May Allow Foreign Students to Work Up to 30 Hours a Week or Waive this Cap Entirely

Of the 1.1 million migrants who entered the United Kingdom in the year 2022, 476,000 were international students. 161,000 Indian students—including 33,240 dependents—came to the UK, making India the dominant supplier.

Currently, the estimated 6,80,000 foreign students studying in the UK are only permitted to work a maximum of 20 hours per week. However, in an effort to strengthen the country's economy, conversations have started within the UK government about extending this restriction to 30 hours per week or waiving this cap entirely.

In order to fill labour shortages in many industries across the nation, it is expected that foreign students studying in the UK, including Indians, will be permitted to work longer hours and undertake or look for more Part-Time Job Options in the UK.

Businesses are in desperate need of employees, as per UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, there are 1.3 million job vacancies, nearly 500,000 more than there were before the Covid-19 outbreak.

Lifting the hour limit for international students is part of a swathe of proposals being considered, as per UK government officials, who also noted that the notion is still in its infancy.

Will UK Home Secretary's New Plan Impact Post Study Student Visa? is still an unanswered matter in question that has intentions to limit the number of foreign students who enter the nation. However, if this turns true in the foreseeable future, it could throw a wrench in the works.

Home Secretary Suella Braverman has devised measures to lower the number, including reducing the amount of time foreign students can stay in the country after completing their education, as net migration numbers rose to a record of 504,000 in the year 2022.

Additionally, restrictions on the number of dependents permitted to the UK and banning international students from enrolling in "low-quality" programmes are under consideration. But the Department of Education contends that the limitations will impoverish UK universities, which rely on international students for financial support.

As per the UK-based New Way Consultancy, international students and their dependents helped contribute to the UK's economy. It is through tuition fees ranging from GBP 10,000 to GBP 26,000 and a GBP 400 annual National Health Service (NHS) surcharge for the student and a GBP 600 yearly charge for a dependant.

The report issued a cautionary note that restrictions on UK Graduate Work Visas would push Indian students to study in Australia or study in Canada, which would eventually put an end to the UK's student market.
