In a recent report, the UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak announced his new goal of making “Mathematics” great again. He believes that the anti-maths mindset in the country has severely affected the economy of the nation over the years.
As a subject, mathematics has seen two extremely contrasting views, with enjoying the subject while others dreading the same. Bringing several benefits to the growth and development of individuals, organisations, disciplines and even countries. Reports revealed that Sunak will be pushing for Mathematics to become a compulsory subject for individuals till they turn 18 years of age with the hope that Britain will value the subject.
An excerpt from his speech stated the urgency of changing the “anti-maths mindset”. He called to “start prizing numeracy for what it is – a key skill every bit as essential as reading,” said the excerpt which is set to be delivered in Downing Street as per the Guardian.

Rishi Sunak’s plans have been received as ambitious, with many in the opposition Labour Party highlighting the need for recruiting more math teachers, without which the goal will not be achievable.
As per reports, the British government has begun working on creating a committee comprising education experts, business representatives, and mathematicians. Among the objectives of the committee is the possibility of increasing the minimum compulsory age from 16 to 18, the news reports added.
In related news, the UK had earlier this year introduced a new commission that will deal specifically with developing a new international education strategy. The objective of the new commission was to achieve the goal while considering the benefits of international students in the UK and also taking into account the needs and requirements of the country as well. It had been reported that the UK planned to reduce the post-study visa validity down from 2 years.
