About Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Scholarship

As outlined above, the Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters (EMJM) scholarship is financial aid for the joint master's programme offered by the EU. The programme consists of high-level and integrated master's courses which are designed and delivered by an international partnership of HEIs. According to official sources, three institutions from three different countries design and deliver the EMJM programme.

The regulations stipulate that two of the three institutions should be from countries recognised as EU member states, meanwhile, the third should have been recognised as countries associated with the Programme, which were also called Programme Countries.

Through the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Scholarship, the EU aims to present itself as an epitome of academic excellence and attractiveness, through international academic cooperation and enhancing student mobility, in addition to offering scholarships to the best candidates among the selected.

Being a full-time award, the Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters scholarship will be awarded for the entire duration of the Master's programme, i.e. 12-24 months. Regulations also cite that only first-time EMJM students will be eligible for the scholarship. To maintain a “geographical balance” and avoid situations where several candidates from one nationality receive most of the scholarships, a mandate has been placed where only a total of 10% of the candidates from one nationality will be able to receive the award.

How the EMJM Scholarship is Calculated?

Every eligible candidate will receive an Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters scholarship award amount appropriate to their programme and research needs. However, as per regulations, there is an upper limit on the award amount that students can receive under the EMJM programme. The maximum EMJM scholarship that a student can receive is calculated as follows:

  • EUR 1,400/month x DS

    • DS stands for the duration of the master's programme

In addition to this, the European Union has also outlined the maximum scholarship amount for the duration of the grant agreement which is calculated as follows:

  • EUR 1,400/month x DR x NRS

    • DR stands for the maximum duration of the in months of the Master’s programme spanning anywhere from 12 to 24 months.

    • NRS stands for the total number of scholarships foreseen for the entire duration of the grant agreement, which at most will reach 60 scholarships.

Therefore, every candidate will receive a different scholarship award amount, however, as per the funding rules dictated by the EU, all candidates will receive the maximum amount of scholarship as calculated throughout the duration of their programme.
