In a first of its kind in Israel, elite athletes aspiring to pursue higher education while participating in different sports categories will be eligible for a scholarship offered by Tel Aviv University (TAU). Announced on Sunday, 14th August 2022, TAU will be offering this scholarship for athletes aged between 17 and 30.
This Tel Aviv University scholarship for international students, called the International Sports Scholarship Fund, was established as a result of a donation from an Israeli-British TAU Governor and philanthropist, Linda Streit.
As per the announcement, the International Sports Scholarship Fund at Tel Aviv University will be available for athletes from all nationalities. Qualifying athletes will be asked to choose from nearly two dozen degree programmes at TAU International, all taught in English. These athletes will also be able to train and practice using university facilities.

In return for receiving the scholarships, the qualifying “athletes will be required to participate in specific sporting events”, representing Israel in competitions abroad.
To pick out the best candidates for the scholarship, TAU International has created a committee of representatives. Along with these representatives, Israeli sports professionals associated with the sports centre at TAU will also influence the selection of the appropriate candidates.
Speaking on the inauguration of the scholarship, Streit highlighted that she had established the Danial Howard Foundation in memory of her son, who had been an elite rower training to represent Israel in global competitions. The foundation had been created with the objective of supporting excellence in sports, while also matching her dream of seeing an athlete representing Israel on the Olympic podium where her son was training to stand.

The Vice President of International Collaboration at Tel Aviv University expressed her ardour over the announcement of Israel’s first initiative fostering the education and futures of elite athletes, who often are put in situations where they must choose between academics and professional athletics.
A recent survey revealed that more students were set to study abroad due to increased job opportunities. Scholarships like the one offered by Tel Aviv University will help elite athletes train for their favourite sports while also gaining a world-class degree from one of the reputable universities in the world.
