The new measures introduced in the immigration system in Denmark will attract foreign talents to work in areas of labour shortage.

Denmark to Relax Immigration Rules on Work Visa

Denmark is facing a labour shortage and to tackle it, the country is planning to introduce several measures to relax its immigration rules to attract talent from all over the world. The steps include lowering minimum salary requirements and expanding the fast-track work permit schemes.

These initiatives will make it easier for companies to hire non-EU workers in Denmark. Along with that, more jobs will open to foreigners who wish to immigrate to the country. Also, international students studying in Denmark will receive an extended period to search for jobs after completing their degree.

The Danish Aliens Act will be amended with these changes, which the Parliament agreed upon on March 23, 2023. The changes are expected to come into effect from April 1, 2023 onwards. Check out the key changes that will be introduced.

Euronews has previously cited that Denmark is facing a labour shortage with 42% of its companies facing difficulties in recruitment in the first quarter of 2022.

The sectors which are facing a major crisis of labour are:

  • Science, engineering, healthcare, finance, teaching and IT professionals who are educated to the degree level.

  • The Skilled Workers List mainly includes associate professionals and clerks in science and engineering, bookkeeping, business and administration and social care.

  • Machinery, metals, building and trades are also included. As per the new rules, the job roles will remain on the lists for two years instead of six months. The lists are updated after every two years.

The steps taken by Denmark will help to make it easier for foreign nationals to work and do business in the country. The pay threshold for work and residence permits is being lowered which would allow more jobs to open to foreign nationals. The earlier limit was DK 465,000 while the new limit is DKK 375,000 which will allow more people to apply for permits.

Along with these changes, the fast-track certification process for companies wanting to employ foreigners will also be expanded to include those with 10 full-time employees.
