New India-Australia Pact: Students Visas Can Be Extended Up to 8 Years Without Any Sponsorship

On May 29, 2023, Monday, India and Australia signed a migration and mobility collaboration agreement to expand possibilities for students, academic researchers, and business personnel. Indian graduates of Australian tertiary institutions on a student visa can now seek to work and continue professional development without visa sponsorship for up to eight years under the new system.

The exchange of students, recent graduates, researchers, and businesses is encouraged by this agreement, which will improve ties between the two areas' populations. He recognised the importance of the visit and the fact that it was the sixth meeting between the two leaders since Albanese took office in May 2022. He also supported India's choice to open a consulate in Brisbane.

This expands on the consulates already in Perth, Melbourne, and Sydney, strengthening the diplomatic connections even further. Australia plans to establish a new consulate in Bengaluru, Karnataka, in 2023, making it the sixth Australian diplomatic mission in India.

Graduates from Indian tertiary institutions who are in Australia on a student visa will now have the chance to work and further their professional development without needing a sponsor for a maximum of eight years under the terms of the India-Australia migration and mobility partnership pact. The start date for this plan's implementation is July 1 of this year.

A pilot programme called MATES (Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early-professionals Scheme), with a yearly cap of 3,000 spaces available for a duration of four years, will be launched as part of this programme. For Indian graduates and early-career professionals who are knowledgeable and skilled in particular fields of study, MATES wants to provide a new pathway that would allow them to live and work in Australia for up to two years.

According to sources, the first list of acceptable educational backgrounds includes such including agricultural technology (AgriTech), information and communication technology (ICT), engineering, mining, renewable energy, and artificial intelligence (AI). Future areas could be added with the assistance of a collaborative working group.

Moreover, recent years have seen a notable transition in India-Australian ties as both nations have realised the potential for collaboration in several industries and the complementing strengths of their respective economies.

India and Australia have been seeking to strengthen their connection for mutual benefit because of shared democratic ideals, dedication to multilateralism, and expanding economic links.
