Emergency Accommodation Support for International Students in Australia

The NSW government has released an AUD$20 million package as a support for international students. The Australian Homestay Network (AHN) is working closely with them to provide emergency support to international students staying in Australia.

Majority of these students are in a homestay in major cities like Sydney and Wollongong. In order to provide accommodation and host these students, almost 300 local families have registered with the AHNs International Student Support Network (ISSN) program.

There has been an overall 95%increase in the number of ISSN applications since July and the number of applications referred by Study NSW is almost doubling. The contribution of Study NSW partnership is more than 80% of ISSN.

David Bycroft, the founder of AHM said that they are expecting a continuous rise in demand for assistance and more hosts will be needed in the major locations. He further said that around 21% of international students in Australia could become homeless and so they are looking forward to the success of this programme across the country.

Bycroft added that Australia has more than 555,000 students who hold a student visa and most of them are struggling hard with their studies while dealing with loneliness, unemployment, uncertainty and inability to pay the rent. In spite of this, the support and initiative taken by the government is fantastic and it shows how they care for them and stand by them for their care and support.
