Canada held its first Express Entry draw for the current year on January 11, 2023. The last draw was held on November 23, 2022. Eligible candidates from the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) were invited to apply.
In this round, the number of Invitations to Apply (ITA) issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC) Canada was 5,500. The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) cut-off score increased to 507.
It is expected that the jump in the CRS cut-off scores will delay the immigration process for those who are willing to take the Express Entry route.

The previous draw held in November saw the lowest minimum CRS score at 491. The cutoff score were decreasing steadily since the Express Entry draw restarted in July 2022.
The sharp rise again in the CRS score can be that the latest Express Entry draw came after one and half months. There was also an increase in the invitation for the draws. There were additional 750 invitations over November 23, 2022, where 4,750 candidates had received invitations. In 2022, the total number of ITAs was 35,750 from July to the rest of the year.
IRCC has made some major changes in the Canadian Express Entry draw which will be implemented this year. The NOC 2021 was executed in the November 2022 round. The National Occupation Classification (NOC) is a system that determines a person’s professional and skill level in the Express Entry pool.
Additionally, IRCC has changed skill categorisation from 0-D level to a system based on training, education, experience and responsibilities (TEER). The new TEER system has revised skill levels of NOC 2016 from 0-E and created an equivalent of five TEERS. Now 16 new occupations are eligible to apply for economic immigration programs managed by Express Entry such as FSWP and CEC.
In 2023, 82,880 immigrants will be admitted as permanent residents through Express Entry. Immigration contributes to 90% of labour force growth and approximately 75% of population growth in Canada.

Candidates who have submitted their profile already to the IRCC Express Entry pool were invited to switch to the new NOC 2021. The update has to be done for each position in their IRCC profile. The report says that failure to do so will lead to disqualification from receiving Invitations to Apply (ITAs).
