Canada Announces New Work Permit for USA H-1B Visa Holders

Sean Fraser, Canada's Immigration Minister, recently announced that the Canadian government will create an open work-permit pathway for 10,000 American H-1B visa holders. This current project tries to attract qualified employees from the United States and place them in jobs in Canada.

In addition, family members of H-1B visa holders would be able to study or work under the programme. The new work permit for H1-B speciality occupation visa holders will be available on July 16, 2023.

Approved candidates will be granted an open work visa for up to three years, allowing them to work for nearly any business/work in Canada. Their spouses and dependents will be able to apply for a temporary residence visa, as well as a work or study permit, if necessary.

This policy will be in force for one year, or until IRCC gets 10,000 applications. Only the main candidates will be included against the application cap, not their accompanying family members. Canada will also hold a STEM-specific draw under category-based selection to offer extra Express Entry invites.

According to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), Canada's high-growth industries will supply the employment of the future, and companies will require access to top people to fuel innovation and propel developing technologies ahead. Furthermore, this new plan incorporates new and improved strategies to assist Canadian enterprises in thriving in a competitive market.

According to Minister Fraser, the Canadian federal government will create a special immigration pathway by the end of this year for highly educated people from all over the world, enabling them to work for digital businesses in Canada whether or not they already have a job offer. Foreign individuals in specialised jobs, notably in the technology/IT and skilled sector, are granted temporary work permits through the US H-1B visa programme.

Those backed by venture capital, angel investor groups, and business incubators that have committed funds, as well as those supported by business incubators that are members of Canada's Tech Network, will be a priority. The changes to the temporary work permit option for applicants to the Start-up Visa Programme, as well as the revised application prioritisation scheme, will go into effect later this year.

Moreover, Canada's decision to welcome American H-1B visa holders via the open work-permit stream demonstrates the country's commitment to recruiting qualified individuals and encouraging economic growth. This programme not only helps visa holders by providing new career options, but it also allows their relatives to study or work in Canada.
