Beginning July 1, 2023, Indian students enrolled in tertiary education programmes in Australia may apply for employment there unsponsored for up to eight years. It is a consequence of a bilateral deal that India and Australia struck in May of this year.

There will be up to 3,000 job roles available under the Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early Professionals Scheme (MATES). Using MATES, Indian graduates and early career professionals can live and work in Australia for up to two years with knowledge and skills in targeted fields of study.
This visa is open to Indian professionals working in seven different industries, including information and communication technology, financial technology, mining, artificial intelligence, and engineering.
Australia offered modifications to its immigration policy in April 2023 to accelerate the influx of highly competent people and simplify the process of obtaining status as permanent residents. The administration promised to streamline and simplify the high-skilled professional visa application process whilst also taking initiatives to keep overseas students in the country.
