Established in 1836, the University of London is an open-research university, associated with the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the European University Association, and Universities UK. Also, it was the first university in the United Kingdom to conduct examinations for women. It is among the oldest universities in England. In 1837, the university began offering degrees in the area of medicine, law, and arts. The worldwide programs are managed by the University of London Worldwide (previously called the University of London International Academy). It is the main academic office that handles international study programs.
Infrastructure, Campus & Courses
The campus of the university is spread over 12 hectares of land. It comprises eight residence halls and a senate house, which features a central library with thousands of books, journals, and magazines. The campus is well maintained and provides a calm learning environment. There are eighteen institutions, which are located within the campus. Some of the main institutes are the Courtauld Institute of Art, Goldsmiths, City, King's College, London School of Economics & Political Science, Queen Mary Institute, St. George's, and the Royal Holloway.
The university offers an undergraduate degree program and postgraduate degree program. The university comprises some major institutes, including the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, Institute of English Studies, and Institute of Historical Research. This provides the students with a great opportunity to explore the fieldwork under the well-experienced faculty members. Also, the students are taken for industrial visits along with the faculty members. They are guided under professionals. A broad range of subjects gives students the scope to choose a course according to their area of interest.
The external academic programs are imparted through the member institutions that include Birkbeck, Goldsmiths, King's College London, London School of Economics, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, Queen Mary, Royal Holloway, Royal Veterinary College, School of Oriental and African Studies and University College London.
Popular courses include Accounting and Finance, Business and Management, Computing and Information Systems, Development and Earth Sciences, Economics, and Education and Teaching.

The university has many remarkable alumni, including Fred Mulley (former British Secretary of State Defence), Mahatma Gandhi (Father of the Nation - India), Florence Nightingale (modern nursing), Nelson Mandela (Father of the Nation - South Africa), Alexander Graham Bell (inventor of the telephone), Elton John (renowned singer), Jeremy Heywood (11th cabinet secretary), Albert Einstein (world-famous scientist, won Nobel Prize in Physics), John F. Kennedy (former President of the US), Mick Jagger (singer & composer), and Thomas Hardy (well-known novelist).

The total strength of the university is about 2,13,270 students. The undergraduate program includes 92,760 students, and 68,500 students are under the postgraduate program.
