Cyril Shroff, a leading corporate lawyer and partner of Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas has inaugurated a chair at the University of Oxfordto offer fully-funded scholarships for research students in law from India. The scholarship is a personal and family office initiative.
The chair will come up in India Centre for Sustainable Development at the university and will be based in Somerville College. It will cover the full expenses of three Indian students from 2023.
A statement released confirmed that the number of awards will increase in future but the exact number and total expenses per student have not been disclosed.
The Cyril Shroff scholarship will encourage research in demanding law and policy issues and also emphasises climate change and sustainability. It also aspires to support brain gain in the country while developing a pipeline of skilled talent and research.
Shroff said that he is starting his giving journey and the first batch will be awarded in 2023.
This initiative is part of their wider engagement over time and thescholarship will be an amalgamation of the values of the Shroff family and Somerville College.
Shroff also highlighted that he believes scholars of law and policy at Oxford will be instrumental in tackling the intractable challenges in India. Somerville College is a perfect partner for this journey as the first Indian woman, Cornelia Sorabji, studied law there.
